A 2023 study published in Chemosphere tested 30 common cleaning products and detected 530 unique volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Of these, 193 were classified as hazardous with potential to cause respiratory damage, elevated cancer risk, and developmental concerns.
A comprehensive 2024 review in Environment International found that both occupational and residential exposure to cleaning products increases the risk of asthma and asthma-like symptoms. Cleaning sprays, chlorine bleach, and disinfectants showed the strongest associations with respiratory effects.
Research published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health identified fragrances, glycol ethers, and ethanolamines as frequently used substances in cleaning products.
